A Contrastive Analysis between the Discourses of Chinese and English Cosmetic Instructions Based on Interpersonal Function

Abstract: Cosmetic instruction, as the information carrier of cosmetics, plays an important role in conveying messages and arousing the interest of consumers. Therefore the study of cosmetic instructions has become a need.
This thesis, based on the theory of discourse analysis and interpersonal function, with the samples of 30 Chinese cosmetic instructions and 30 English ones, aims to make a contrast analysis between Chinese and English cosmetic instructions through mood and modality. Historical document method, introducing review method, induction method and some other methods are employed in this thesis to examine whether functional grammar is feasible when applied to discourse analysis. And another purpose is to provide some suggestions for the writing of domestic cosmetic instructions, and then promote the development of domestic cosmetic products.
(1) The results of the discussion and contrastive analysis of the two versions are as follows: first, the theory of function grammar is applicable in the discourse analysis of cosmetic instructions. Second, there are some similarities and also differences in the two versions. (1) Declarative mood is more widely used in English cosmetic instructions than in Chinese ones. (2) As for modal adjuncts, Chinese instructions tend to use more modal adjuncts than English instructions.

摘 要:化妆品说明书,作为化妆品的信息载体,在传递信息和激发消费者兴趣的过程中扮演着不容忽视的角色,因而对化妆品说明书的研究也成为必要。
本文以对比文本分析和韩礼德的人际功能理论为理论依据,以30篇中文及30篇英文化妆品说明书为研究语料,从语气、情态等方面,采用史料文案法、引介评论法、统计学研究方法、归纳及比较研究等研究方法,探讨和分析了汉英化妆品说明书中人际功能的各种实现方式,希望检验系统功能语法在语篇对比分析中的可行性,并通过对比为国内化妆品说明书的写作提供意见和建议,从而促进国内化妆品的发展。
语料的分析和讨论结果如下:首先,系统功能语法中的人际功能在化妆品说明书的语篇对比研究中是可行的;其次,中英文化妆品说明书在人际功能方面存在异同点:(1)中英文化妆品说明书中都大量使用了陈述语气以传递必要的信息,而且英文化妆品说明书中更多;(2)情态方面,两者都趋于使用低量值语气助词,但中文化妆品说明书会比英文中使用更多的情态附加语。这些差异源于两种语言不同的文化背景以及其他一些因素。
本文的语料选择方面或许带有主观性,由于研究能力有限讨论出的结果也不一定准确,但是希望能够吸引更多的学者对这一领域加以研究,从而促进国内化妆品行业的发展。
