荀子渐化思想与庄子、禅宗的化思想

  要:将荀子渐化思想与庄子、禅宗的化思想进行比较,可从以化为中心在学理上厘清儒家的荀子[是不是“荀子的儒家”]与道家、佛家思想之区别。从化之对象来说,荀子在性,庄子在道,而从化性而言,荀子主张以礼为则的由渐、积而化,而庄子则在化道;从化之路径而言,虽然,荀庄皆言自化,但由于庄子是依无形之道而化,故为自化,而荀子所化皆积于学礼,故曰外化;从化之工夫来说,荀庄以朴同为目标,但由于学术路向不同,一则心内体道而归朴,一则心外学道而归仁,这是荀庄化道工夫之异矣。荀子的渐化思想,主张由渐而化,由积而化,故而叫做积渐或积靡。也就是一种渐进的缓慢的修行方法,化之工夫,积渐也是化之动因。其化之方式亦如中国禅宗史上之渐修。

Abstract: A comparison of Xunzi’s thought of gradual edification with those of Zhuangzi and Zen can reveal the differences of Xunzi’s Confucianism from Taoism and Buddism by focusing on edification. In terms of the targets of edification, Xunzi emphasized humanity, and Zhuangzi stressed Tao. Regarding the nature of edification, Xunzi advocated progressive edification in the light of rites, while Zhuangzi proposed the edification via Tao. Concerning the way of edification, though both claimed self-edification, Zhuangzi counted on intangible Tao, which is internal, and Xunzi’s edification results from the acquisition of rites, which is external. In view of effort, both regarded plainness as their aims, but different academic orientations gave rise to ultimate plainness from the internal understanding of Tao on the one hand and ultimate benevolence out of external learning of Tao. Xunzi’s thought of gradual edification maintained edification stemming from a progressive and accumulative process. It is similar to continuous cultivation in the history of Chinese Zen.
